What is Self-Control?

Self-control is all about altering one’s own attitudes, behaviors, personality in tune with expectations and standards of the society in order to achieve one’s goals and objectives. Failing so, it results into rejection and ostracisation by the society. It requires great mental energies and efforts to possess self-control.

Self-control is like self-mastery. It is absence of anger, intolerance and impulsiveness. You may compare your body with a chariot, your mind with reigns and your intellect with driver. Self-control means controlling your mind and body. You can make anything and everything through self-control. You need to control all your five senses such as sight sound, smell, taste and touch to have total control on yourself.

Merits of Self-control:

Self control gives you peace of mind, ensures better relations with others thereby giving you competitive edge over others. Better self-control leads to higher self-esteem, better interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. It will earn you respect and goodwill in the society. It makes you simple and humble. Overall, self-control enhances the personality of individuals thus taking them through the righteous path. People reached from nowhere to number one position though sheer self-control.

Demerits Due to Dearth of Self-control:

It is difficult to raise high in life. And it is very easy to fall free in life. Lack of self-control has several demerits. People resort to drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, crimes and violence, impulsive behavior and unwanted pregnancy due to lack of self-control. Individuals lose self-respect and dignity in the society. Susan’s Anger and Ron’s Self-Control:

In an office two colleagues by name Susan and Ron worked amicably. Susan was senior in the office while Ron was junior although the latter was elder to the former in age. Besides, Ron was more experienced when clubbed with his past experience in other areas when compared with Susan. Both Ron and Susan were good by nature, but Susan was a stubborn and dominant woman. She always dictated others as she was the senior most in the department. However, both maintained good friendship.

Once there was a task assigned by Susan where in Ron was asked to collect the documents of other departments and were to be handed over to HR department. Under the instructions of Susan, Ron collected and handed over to Tony in the HR department. But what Susan meant was to hand over the same to a specific person John in HR department. In fact, Susan and Tony did not gel with each other.

On hearing that the documents were handed over to Tony, Susan burst into anger and shouted at Ron. Ron tried to remind Susan that the documents were handed over as instructed. Susan lost her self-control and took Ron to task about the issue. Ron repeatedly tried to persuade Susan that it was not an issue to blow up in proportions. He went on further by telling her that Susan would have specifically communicated to hand over the same to John. Ron was a cool and mature man and somehow managed to control the temper of Susan about the improper communication. From thereafter, both Ron and Susan had strained relations and departed forever. From this example it becomes very clear about the importance of self-control.


Acquire knowledge as knowledge is power. It will help in strengthening your self-control. Those who are highly focused and task oriented have better self-control than others. Leaders demonstrate their self-control during success and defeat Self-control is a skill. It is not a trait or talent that one is born with. It is possible by changing your behavior through practice. Everything is in your mind. Therefore, control your mind so that you can control everything within and around you for achieving all-round success.

With the current global meltdown, many doubts have been raised about the falling ethical and moral standards within the management educational system. We cannot claim that the business schools and the students alone are responsible for the present economic crisis. However, we need to set certain standards and benchmarks for the students so that they could become role models for others and also they can avert such economic crises in future.

What Should an Ideal B-school Student Possess?

Management students should be equipped with knowledge about management in general with special emphasis on a particular functional skill. It is vital to know the basic jargon about management, how a company is run and what it takes a company successful. They should know about various skills such as soft skills apart from hard skills. They should learn to live with uncertainty and complexity which are the hallmarks in this century.

How to Overcome Challenges in Management Education (MBA) in India?

The present economic meltdown has thrown several challenges to business managers and leaders across the world. Everyone started blaming business schools for the present mess. Is it justified to blame them? If not, then who is responsible for the current global mess? Is it the business schools or faculties or students or parents or all to be blamed?

Challenges in Management Education:

The current curriculum in management education does not teach students in facing the challenges in business environment. How to manage uncertainty and complexity are not taught in business schools. It merely teaches the concepts with case studies. It does not focus on the challenges arising out of rapid growing technology and the challenges involved in running an enterprise.

Unfortunately, the best talent is going to industry where salaries are lucrative. Most of the students pass out successfully from business schools due to their self-preparation. Engineering students have the advantage of checking the theoretical concepts at laboratories through experiments. It is essential to have more visiting faculties with diversified and rich industry experience. It is like having diversified menu on a platter. It should be made mandatory for every business school to have a fulltime faculty for each functional specialization like Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Production, etc., Besides, they can have visiting faculties who are passionate towards teaching for every specialized functional skill.

Look for the professors who are passionate in teaching rather than who pass their time in classrooms. The passionate professors would love to share their knowledge, experience, expertise with students to take on the real corporate battles. Take the professors with research, consultancy, and industry and also with teaching experience as it enriches the teaching process. Blending all these ingredients would make a faculty as outstanding.

You cannot make a successful manager in classrooms. What is needed is the industry interface which builds confidence among the students. Whatever the doubts the students posses can be clarified and verified with their exposure to corporate world. The theoretical background in the classrooms along with practical exposure in the corporate world can make successful professionals.

The project work should be contextual, relevant and should focus on the current scenarios. MBA is a professional degree and it should train and groom the students to be true professionals to take on the challenges being faced in the business environment.

Boosting self-esteem is very easy when you know what is all about self-esteem. Having self-esteem enhances the prospects of successful personal, professional and social life. It is an essential component of success in everything right from childhood, to adolescence and to adulthood. What is Self-Esteem?

According to Goleman author of the book titled ‘Emotional Intelligence’, “Self-esteem or self-efficacy has to do with a realistic assessment of your strengths and weaknesses”.

When you feel bad about yourself from time to time you have low self-esteem. In contrast, when you feel good about yourself constantly you have high self-esteem. Self-esteem means having pride in oneself and self-respect. It is a state of thinking where one feels good about oneself. Self-esteem is all about feeling good of oneself every time whether in success or failure.

Self-esteem should not be confused with self-confidence which is related to self-beliefs and sense of being able to do something successfully. Self-esteem should not also be confused with self-efficacy which is related to certain abilities, capabilities and competencies to move towards future performance. The concept is believed to have been coined by John Milton. Self-esteem is one of the important ingredients for success. It is our ability to value ourselves. It is the overall opinion we have about ourselves. When you think that you are competent then you have appropriate self-esteem i.e. high self-esteem and when you think that you are not competent then you have inappropriate self-esteem i.e. low self-esteem.

Self-esteem comes from a sense of our own worth. It is based on true awareness of our strengths and weaknesses, combined with acceptance that human beings are, by nature, a mixture of such qualities. We are living in a society that is continually being impacted by the symptoms and side effects of low self-esteem.

Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs:

Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist, developed hierarchy of needs where in after fulfilling one level of needs, human beings will be motivated to reach the next higher order of needs. For instance, human beings look basically for meeting physiological needs like food, cloth, shelter, sex etc. While working, employees look for rest periods, work breaks, lunch breaks etc., The second higher level of needs is the safety and security needs where human beings like to be free from fear of physical, psychological and financial needs. At workplace, the employees look for job security, pension benefits, insurance etc., to secure themselves. The third higher level of needs is the social needs where they crave for love and affection and affiliation with their communities and groups. While working in organizations, they like to work in groups by forming teams which is the right example for social needs. After fulfilling these needs they crave for esteem needs such as they expect respect and recognition from others. Hike in their pay and perks, promotions and having company car can promote their self-esteem needs. The top highest hierarchy of needs is the self-actualization needs where they want to have freedom to be creative and innovative and want to pursue their passionate areas of interest. When the employees are encouraged to take up higher roles and responsibilities they enjoy accepting the challenges as they derive immense pleasure out of it.

From the above hierarchy of needs, we find the self-esteem has place for itself which is indication of its importance in human motivation and needs.

Self-Confidence Leads to Success

If you think that you can do it then it is confidence, if you think that you can alone do it then it is overconfidence. There is a thin line separating self-confidence from over-confidence.

Confidence is the key to overcome trials and tribulations in life. It is one of the most important aspects which help in moving forward in life. Confidence is the ability to have full faith in oneself to face the fight and to take it forward to its logical end. Confidence comes when you make the things happen not when you let the things happen. It helps in touching upper limits. It brings inner satisfaction, happiness and joy.

Confidence is an inner voice which tells us what we can do. Confidence does not mean overrating or overestimating than that of others. It is neither feeling superior or great but feeling comfortable with convictions. Confidence is the ability to assess and judge yourself properly. It is also the ability not to underestimate your rivals or competitors. Confidence is essential everywhere. For instance, a leader needs confidence to lead the team, a student needs confidence to score higher marks and a teacher needs confidence to speak in front of students.

John’s Overconfidence:

John was highly educated and was good at his job. Due to recession the entire department was closed. Finally the axe fell on John also to leave the organization. Before being axed, the employer provided outplacement to John to join in one of their affiliates where his services could be utilized. John was overconfident and said the employer that he had couple of offers and would shortlist the same and get back to them. On hearing this, the employer provided the opportunity to one of his colleagues.

After closure of establishment John had to struggle for a suitable employment for a month as the job market was weak due to recession. John had ability and capability to get better employment and finally settled down for an employment as per his passion. Only regret he had was to remain unemployed for a month and he lost a salary for that period. Had John accepted the previous employer’s offer he would have worked there and would have tried for better opportunities by working in an affiliate organization. John’s over-confidence led to losing salary for a period of one month and undergoing mental trauma without job. Let us accept the fact that over-confidence is the worst enemy.

Signs of Self-Confident People:

A self-confident person grabs the opportunities whereas an over-confident person rejects the available opportunities. Let us look at the signs and signals of self-confident people.

1. Never doubt their competencies, capabilities, abilities and skills.
2. Have total command and control over themselves.
3. Are risk takers and love to live on edge.
4. Humility is their hallmark.
5. Have neither superiority nor inferiority complex. They possess the right complex desired for success.
