“Goal Setting for 2013” - Professor M.S.Rao

"A dream is just a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline." - Harvey Mackay

Dear friend,

Happy Christmas and New Year – 2013!

As we are entering into a new year we must set our goals in such a way that we will do the things in a different manner to accomplish and achieve the impossible. When we do routine things routinely we get routine results. In contrast, when we do things differently we will achieve unique outcomes. Hence, from this year onwards let us change the way we think, do and act to make the future better.

If you want to become a successful professional in your area of interest you must invest 1,000 hours regularly. It helps you establish and build your professional brand. Malcolm Gladwell, the Author of Outliers rightly said, “People who thrive put in at least 1000 hours of sustained, consistent training to reach their potential.” Hence, choose your passionate area and then invest your precious time, energy and resources into it for 1,000 hours and I am sure you will be an expert in your domain and an authority in it.  People look to you for your guidance and advice and you grow as a leader.

Remember that if you invest for 10,000 hours in your passionate area (3 years approximately) consistently, you become a regional celebrity. If you invest 20,000 hours (6 years approximately) you become a national celebrity. If you invest for 30,000 hours (9 years approximately) consistently you become an international celebrity.

Set SMART goals where SMART is the acronym for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. Ensure that you ink your goals and read daily twice after you get up from bed and before you go to bed. Divide your goals into short-term and long-term goals and align them without any contradiction.  Keep moving forward by taking feedback regularly. One day you will find yourself on the top of the world where everyone looks to you for your guidance and you enjoy great respect.

All the best!

“Psychology of Unsuccessful Parents and their Children” - Professor M.S.Rao

“The words a father speaks to his children in the privacy of the home are not overheard at the time, but, as in whispering galleries, they will be clearly heard at the end and by posterity.” - Jean Paul Richter

It has been observed that the parents who failed in business or life tend to be more cautious and secretive by nature.  They often don’t appreciate to reveal their cards and are more responsible and careful in their decision-making. They empathize with others. They take more precautions in bringing up their children so that the latter can avoid repeating the mistakes. They take more precautions and micromanage their children and observe every moment so that children can grow safely to succeed in this world. The ultimate aim of such parents is to see the success in their children as they could not taste success in their lives.

The children of the failed fathers understand the harsh realities in life.  They try to be more careful and are determined to taste success to make their parents proud and to prove to the world. They become tougher and don’t get carried away by the failures in their lives as they learned from the experiences of their parents.  They often learn from the experiences of others to avoid getting trapped. They take both success and failure with equanimity. They empathize with others and grow as responsible and successful persons quickly. Hence, their success is definitely is higher.

God is great as He balances the account statement with successes and failures. If parents fail during their lifetime He compensates by blessing success for their children. Hence, both failed parents and their children don’t have to regret for failures as life if full of peaks and valleys. And life is incomplete without ups and downs. To conclude, the failed fathers are more cautious towards their children while their children are more determined to achieve success.

“We must do all that we can, to give our children the best in education and social upbringing - for while they are the youth of today, they shall be the leaders of tomorrow.” - John F. Kennedy

“Was Bal Thackeray a Paper Tiger?” - Professor M.S.Rao

“I’m a great admirer of Hitler; and I’m not ashamed to say so! I don’t agree with all methods he employed, but he was a wonderful organizer and orator. I feel he and I have several things in common.” – Bal Thackeray

I was saddened over the death of Bal Thackeray (1927-2012) who was a mass leader and championed various issues especially regional and linguistic ones. He was a cartoonist and went on to become the founder of Shiv Sena and Samna – mouthpiece of Shiv Sena.  His biography inspires many especially for the ordinary people who can aspire to become big like him. However, he had his won challenges who loved controversies and contractions during his lifetime.  In fact, he was king of controversies and sometimes backtracked quickly from his own stand. He was a great orator who lived his life the way he wanted to live. He was good to locals and Maharastrians but bad to non-Marathi’s and non-locals. Of course, every leader has his own way of leadership branding but Bal Thackeray branded himself as a controversial political leader. Whether he was in ruling or opposition he remained like an uncrowned king during his lifetime. He was, no doubt, an autocratic leader who admired Hitler.  He was often noted for making inflammatory speeches.  He failed to reinvent with changing times thus hitting rock bottom in his political career.

He remained not only a newspaper tiger but also a real tiger during his lifetime.  When we look at his biography holistically he would have got more than what he got if he had adopted broader policies with universal brotherhood and tolerance. He would have remained a legend beyond Maharashtra if he had adopted a broad vision coming out of petty regional and linguistic issues.

I express my condolences over the death of this leader.
