“My Personal Meeting with Marshall Goldsmith - Coaching Legend” - Professor M.S.Rao

When I opened my mail inbox at 1300 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) on August 20, 2012, I saw an e-mail from Dr. Marshall Goldsmith who is a Million-selling author of the New York Times bestsellers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won't Get You There.  He is an executive coach for top CEOs in the world and has been ranked as the World’s 7th Management Thinker according to Thinkers50.  Marshall conveyed a personal message to me as we are known to each other since long and he gave me a number of endorsements for my books, and wrote foreword for one of my books, and also for one of my books of my son. I thanked Marshall for the mail as the mail came when the latter was in Dubai on August 19, 2012.  I received another e-mail immediately to my response, and recognized from his email signature that Marshall was in Hyderabad on August 20, 2012.  I was excited as I never met him personally except communicating through e-mails regularly.  I enquired Marshall about the Hotel and other details.  I immediately informed my two sons – M. Ganesh Sai and M. Ramakrishna Sayee over phone about Marshall’s visit to Hyderabad and asked them to get ready at home as I was outside to interview Marshall.

I along with my two sons went to Westin Mindspace and met Marshall at 1500 hours (IST) on August 20, 2012 in room number 1702.  We received warm welcome from Marshall who appeared very simple.  He introduced himself with his brief profile and asked all of us to introduce with our profiles.  He had a great sense of humor and never felt like a great person although he is a renowned coach globally and the #1 ranked coaching guru in the world.

We discussed various global leadership issues and challenges and got photographed with him along with my two sons.   My two sons interviewed him for 45 minutes. Marshall was pleased with my two sons and gifted them a comic book titled, ‘What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’ with his autograph.  We were excited meeting such a great global management thinker who is very simple, humble and above all, a fine human being.  It is a memorable day in our lives as Marshall spent his personal time with us for 90 minutes approximately.  It shows how he cares his friends and others.

The prestigious International Leadership Association (ILA) invited me to lead a webinar on this new concept. Here is the link with details: http://www.ila-net.org/Webinars/Archive/Rao082012.html for your participation.

“Soft Leadership - A New Leadership Perspective by Professor M.S.Rao

“To give you an ounce of idea I dig tons of information.” – Professor M.S.Rao, Founder, MSR Leadership Consultants, India

I have coined a new concept – soft leadership which is drawing international attention with more curiosity about it, and the readers are sending me e-mails to contribute more articles on it. I thought to blog a small post about it.

In fact, we have so many styles in leadership, and I felt that there is a need for a new leadership style as per the changing times and technologies, and due to the rising expectations and aspirations of people.  Hence, I have done research for few years on soft leadership style, and authored a book titled, ‘Soft Leadership: Make Others Feel More Important’ (ISBN 978-81-7515-653-1).  World’s 23rd ranked Management Guru, Dave Ulrich wrote foreword for this book. The book can be purchased URL: http://www.amazon.com/Soft-Leadership-Make-others-important/dp/8175156538  I also wrote an article on it, and published in prestigious Leader to Leader Journal in Spring 2012 issue, and you can purchase it URL: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ltl.20019/abstract

This soft leadership style blends leadership with soft skills as I have done my PhD in soft skills. Both soft skills and leadership are close to my heart, and I created soft leadership where leaders lead from the front with soft skills. This style has proximity with democratic, charismatic, principle-centered, servant, transformational leadership but a unique one as soft leaders of this style are distinguished by 11 Cs – character, charisma, conscience, conviction, courage, communication, compassion, commitment, consistency, consideration, and contribution to make a difference in the lives of others.

You will find more articles on soft leadership in my blog as and when I get new triggers on it. Hence, watch my blog for this new leadership style.

“Do You Have to Massage the Ego of Your Boss?” - Professor M.S.Rao

"People ask the difference between a leader and a boss.... The leader works in the open, and the boss in covert. The leader leads and the boss drives."  - Theodore Roosevelt

The caption of this blog post probably puts you in a fix whether you have to massage the ego of your boss.  Before we arrive at a conclusion there are various aspects to know such as the difference between a boss and a leader, and four models from organizational behavior.

There are four models in organizational behavior namely autocratic, custodial, supportive and collegial.  The autocratic model prevailed initially where employees were under the mercy of employers.  In this model, the employees worked as labor and obeyed whatever the bosses said.  Subsequently surfaced another model named custodial where the employees cannot be fired as they are provided with job security and other financial and non-financial benefits.  It is further followed by another model named supportive where employees are supported by employers and bosses above them.  It is fairly better than the previous models of autocratic and custodial. Currently we have collegial model where there is no much gap between the superiors and subordinates, and all are treated as equal.  The Generation Y appreciates this collegial model, and it is mostly followed by American management and top global companies in the world.  In this model, there will not be any bosses but only leaders. However, we still find bosses in the guise of leaders.

In fact, there is a difference between bosses and leaders as bosses are mostly arrogant and egoistic in nature and they often come with workaholic attitude. Russell H. Ewing differentiates as follows: “A boss creates fear, a leader confidence. A boss fixes blame, a leader corrects mistakes. A boss knows all, a leader asks questions. A boss makes work drudgery, a leader makes it interesting.” The people who work with bosses find it tough to get along with them as the expectations of the bosses are high and they are mostly task oriented. In contrast, the leaders are blend of both task-orientation and people-orientation with a heart to make a difference in the lives of their employees. The leaders adopt transformational leadership style, and treat their subordinates like colleagues and get the tasks executed successfully.  The leaders support the subordinates in their training and development and quicken their career advancement.  They empathize and listen to their subordinates and lead their teams successfully.

If you happen to work under a boss you have to be more careful in your work. As long as you do your work sincerely you don’t have to worry about your boss, and you don’t have to massage his or her ego. All that you must do is to be assertive in your approach and communication.

Best of luck with your boss!

“In the past a leader was a boss. Today's leaders must be partners with their people... they no longer can lead solely based on positional power.” - Ken Blanchard
