“Was Bal Thackeray a Paper Tiger?” - Professor M.S.Rao

“I’m a great admirer of Hitler; and I’m not ashamed to say so! I don’t agree with all methods he employed, but he was a wonderful organizer and orator. I feel he and I have several things in common.” – Bal Thackeray

I was saddened over the death of Bal Thackeray (1927-2012) who was a mass leader and championed various issues especially regional and linguistic ones. He was a cartoonist and went on to become the founder of Shiv Sena and Samna – mouthpiece of Shiv Sena.  His biography inspires many especially for the ordinary people who can aspire to become big like him. However, he had his won challenges who loved controversies and contractions during his lifetime.  In fact, he was king of controversies and sometimes backtracked quickly from his own stand. He was a great orator who lived his life the way he wanted to live. He was good to locals and Maharastrians but bad to non-Marathi’s and non-locals. Of course, every leader has his own way of leadership branding but Bal Thackeray branded himself as a controversial political leader. Whether he was in ruling or opposition he remained like an uncrowned king during his lifetime. He was, no doubt, an autocratic leader who admired Hitler.  He was often noted for making inflammatory speeches.  He failed to reinvent with changing times thus hitting rock bottom in his political career.

He remained not only a newspaper tiger but also a real tiger during his lifetime.  When we look at his biography holistically he would have got more than what he got if he had adopted broader policies with universal brotherhood and tolerance. He would have remained a legend beyond Maharashtra if he had adopted a broad vision coming out of petty regional and linguistic issues.

I express my condolences over the death of this leader.

About the Book:

“God allows us to experience the low points of life in order to teach us lessons we could not learn in any other way. The way we learn those lessons is not to deny the feelings but to find the meanings underlying them.” - Stanley Lindquist

It is rightly said that the wise person learns from the experiences of others whereas the foolish person learns by his/her own experiences. The book helps you become a wise person by learning from the experiences of others.  It packs with several case studies on various international leaders with illustrations and examples such as Peter Drucker, Marshall Goldsmith, Frances Hesselbein, Florence Nightingale, Barack Obama and Steve Jobs.   It inspires you to learn from their success stories and assists you to discover your blind spots thus enhancing your leadership effectiveness and success.  It is a “short course” on leadership useful for people who lead hectic life to excel as smart leaders. Precisely, the book is well punched and presented to ensure valuable takeaways for readers.  The book is useful to leaders at all levels including entrepreneurs, educators and life-long learners.

I would appreciate if you could read the book, and provide your valuable feedback.

“Congratulations President Barack Obama!” - Professor M.S.Rao

Dear Barack Obama,

Congratulations for winning second term as the President of America. It shows that the Americans have immense faith in your leadership.  They are optimistic that you will check recession and ensure America’s prosperity. The global citizens also welcome your victory as we are optimistic about your ability to ensure global peace, stability and prosperity.  You effectively eliminated Osama and ensured peace in Libya.  We are optimistic that you will check global terrorism and ensure global peace where all citizens in the world live with peace and harmony.

With your second win, people have higher aspirations and expectations. Hence, it is more challenging for you to lead as they are number of challenges yet to be addressed by you. Hence, emphasize more on performance and less on rhetoric; walk your talk; convert your charisma into performance; and above all, make a difference in the lives of global citizens.

Good luck with your second term!

“Is Telangana Movement a Short-Term Temptation for Telanganites?” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Love your mother but don’t hate another person’s mother. Love your region but don’t hate another person’s region.” – Professor M.S.Rao

People of Telangana have been demanding for a separate state since many years for their region. Telangana leaders raise the issue frequently and there was a time the statehood was declared by the Congress government but stalled subsequently as there was a stiff opposition from the people of Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions and Andhra Pradesh. It is a typical situation where the political leaders are unable to make a decision as there are a number of intricacies involved in it.  Here are some of the issues for the central government to address:

Will separate state bring development to this region?
What would be the status of Hyderabad, if Telangana is formed?
Would it encourage other regions from other states in India to come up with such similar demands?
Would smaller state ensure rapid economic development?

Politicians in India often play religious, regional, linguistic, and caste cards for their survival, little do they realize that their acts bring divisions among the people temporarily. So is the case of Telangana movement.

Certain things tempt for certain people for some time. Although there are temporary divisions among Telugus created by politicians based on regionalism, it won’t last long as the love for language connects them forever. People can change regions, not languages as they are born into it.  Therefore, love to one’s language is superior to love to one’s region. Hence, the Telangana movement is a short-lived one. Let us not get carried away by short-term temptations. Let us look at the long-term complications and implications involved in dividing the state on regional lines. Would it not encourage demand for smaller states in India?

Think!

“He who loves the world as his own body may be entrusted with the empire.” – Lao Tzu
