“Make A Difference!” - Professor M.S.Rao

I compiled an email list of endorsements of few global leadership gurus including their assistants and affiliated institutions to approach them for endorsement for my upcoming book, Sutras for Smart Leadership – Lessons for Leaders.  I sent the requests through emails.  I have received a mail from Celia Tucker who is the Bookshop Manager of Ashridge Library that she had searched from the web to get the email id of the global leadership guru I was looking for but she could not get and informed me the same. I was unhappy to receive a negative response but I was happy that someone (Celia Tucker) who is unknown to me responded promptly with courtesy. These days, people don’t find time to care for the mails of others. However, I found an exception in my life where Celia took pain to respond promptly with courtesy. Subsequently I shot another mail to Celia requesting for email ids of few international publishers as I recognized from Celia’s email signature that she is associated with library.  Celia is kind to provide couple of addresses of global publishers and also advised me to search Google and approach authors directly. Although I know the same procedure I appreciated her positive attitude to take time to respond.

I thanked for her mail, initiative and positive attitude to respond. I also expressed my gratitude as nobody usually takes time to respond. I also asked her if I could help her in anyway as a reciprocal response. She politely declined my offer of assistance. I have decided to write a post on Celia’s kind gesture so that my readers can get inspired from her initiative, positive attitude and a great heart.

People often think that they have to help others only when they are helped by others. If everyone thinks in that way there will be nobody to add value and make a difference in this world. Hence, hereafter, if someone seeks for assistance and if you can extend in whatever the little way then you really made a difference. Mother Teresa rightly remarked, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in an ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”

“Insider Trading – A White Collar Crime” - Professor M.S.Rao

Rajat Gupta’s involvement in insider trading cost his career and his image. He is the former chairman of Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad.   It is indicted that Rajat tipped Raj Rajaratnam, the boss of Galleon Group and the latter benefitted out of insider trading. Rajat is the product of IIT Delhi and Harvard Business School.  The high flyer is under scanner currently.

What is Insider Trading?

Insider trading is a white collar crime. It is about trading of stock done on the basis of internal information which is not available to general public.  It is breach of security, violation of oath of office and secrecy because the information is leaked before it is made in public. Usually such information is known and accessible to top people within the company.  According to Wikipedia, Insider trading is the trading of a corporation's stock or other securities (e.g. bonds or stock options) by individuals with potential access to non-public information about the company.

Insider trading helps the traders enter and exit the security at the right time either to make money or prevent from losing money. In this process, it is the ordinary investors who lose money as they get information after the stock gets heated up.  By then the top players sell out their stocks and play safe.  It is only the ordinary investors who burn their fingers as they buy the stock at the peak and subsequently lose as the scrip falls.

Leaders at the top must learn lesson from Rajat’s fall from grace.  They must learn the fact that it is tough to climb the ladder of success and easy to have free fall from the top.  When leaders emphasize more on ends than means they end up in a great fiasco. Don’t get tempted by short term gains as it proves to be costly at the end leaving you in the lurch forever.  Emphasize more on means than ends to ensure longevity.  A life spent in simplicity and humility is far better than the life spent with fame initially and falling from grace finally.

“Man and His Quest Beyond Bread and Bed” - Professor M.S.Rao

It is rightly said that man cannot live by bread alone.  His quest goes beyond bread and bed to betterment.  The noted American psychologist, Abraham Maslow outlined Hierarchy of Needs that motivate the man to move from one level to next higher level after accomplishment in each level.  According to Maslow, man basically searches for physiological needs such as food, cloth, shelter and sex. In other words, man searches for bread and upon fulfillment of bread he looks for bed to fulfill his biological needs.  The next level is safety needs where he likes to protect himself from death and wants to stay away from insecurities and apprehensions. When you observe any living thing it struggles for its survival and existence and this is quite natural among human beings as well. After fulfilling this need man enters into third hierarchy of needs - social needs. Aristotle once said that man is a social animal and he cannot live alone.  Hence, man likes to associate with his kith and kin to share his feelings, emotions and ideas within his communities and feels happy to be with his groups and communities. After fulfilling this need, man enters into the fourth level of needs - self-esteem needs where he wants his ego to be protected and respected. For every man ego is very precious and close to him. He doesn’t appreciate if his ego is hurt. If his ego is hurt he may go to any extent to settle the scores.  When we view employees leaving their organizations and joining elsewhere, it is basically because when their egos are hurt by their bosses or others or if they find it is not worthwhile working any longer, they resign.  After accomplishment of this need man goes to the highest of the hierarchy of needs - self-actualization needs.  People love to accept challenging roles and responsibilities and pursue their passions close to their hearts. Man gets total accomplishment only when he enjoys all these five levels one after another hierarchically.  Succinctly, after fulfillment of all these needs, the man becomes a complete man.

You must know these five levels and proceed accordingly to unlock your potential, creativity and genius to become a complete man. To conclude, man likes to be cared, loved, talked, respected and honored.  Recognizing and appreciating his needs help make a difference in the lives of others.
