“Nara Chandrababu Naidu Must Act and Lead on Telangana Issue” - Professor M.S.Rao

“When the going gets tough, tough gets going.” – Saying

Ever since the Telangana movement got aggressive Nara Chandrababu Naidu maintained silence and went behind the screens. He found it tough to manage his party (TDP) as it has presence in all the three regions of Andhra Pradesh – Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana. Erstwhile PRP leader, Chiranjeevi took a firm stand against Telangana as he did not have any presence in Telangana region and subsequently merged his party in Congress.

Both late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy (YSR) and Nara Chandrababu Naidu are powerful leaders from the state of Andhra Pradesh. When YSR was alive he handled the state well and ensured its progress. Due to the death of a great leader like YSR several problems cropped up within the state.

Presently Naidu is facing lot of heat and his leadership skills are under test as how he will survive Telangana crisis. What would he do? Would he bat for Telangana? If so, he would lose his political base in both Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. If he bats for united Andhra Pradesh, he loses his political base in Telangana and he almost lost his base now. Therefore, he is in dilemma how to handle the current political scenario. It is the tough times that produce the great leaders as the real leadership skills emerge during crisis. I am sure Naidu will display his political acumen and leadership skills to survive the current Telangana crisis and emerge as a strong leader. In the present position no party gains in Telangana region except Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS) which is banking on Telangana sentiment. We have to wait and see how long the sentiment lasts.

Currently Naidu maintains neutrality in Telangana issue. He clearly instructed his party leaders from all regions to act as per local sentiments and proceed. However, he must come forward more aggressively and lead from front to get out of the crisis in Andhra Pradesh. He is a visionary leader who is responsible for the present growth of Hyderabad. He cannot afford to sit idle and watch when Hyderabad is sliding back due to 'bandhs' and agitations. Naidu must remember that people will appreciate leaders who make bold decisions. During American Civil War Abraham Lincoln fought against the division of America and became a martyr. America is currently united as a country and the credit goes to the Lincoln’s leadership. Similarly Naidu must display his amazing leadership skills and come forward to give a new direction to Andhra Pradesh as there are no other leaders to match his leadership skills currently. In this context, we must remember the fact that the leaders who divided countries and regions went into the dustbins of history while the leaders who championed for unity remained as great leaders. Hence, I implore Naidu to lead from front to provide a new direction to the state of Andhra Pradesh and once again prove himself as a great leader.

“End of An Academic Leader - NJY (1950 – 2011), Founder of ICFAI” - Professor M.S.Rao

I was shocked to hear the passing away of N.J.Yasaswy on October 08, 2011 who is popularly called NJY within the ICFAI circles. He founded ICFAI and taught to the world how the business of education can be run in an organized way. Although he was a busy person he replied to my each mail and congratulated about my international publications in Emerald and when I presided as a panel judge for Global Leadership Awards – 2011 Malaysia recently.

NJY had excellent academic track record and a first rank holder from Andhra University during his graduation (B.Com). He worked as a faculty member in Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and also as a visiting faculty for IIM Ahmadabad. He later founded ICFAI along with other board members providing quality education to students and employment opportunities for many people. However, during recession ICFAI underwent lot of restructuring resulting into shedding excess flab. Currently it has various business schools, of which, IBS, Hyderabad is the triumph card which is a deemed university. Although ICFAI lost its backbone due to the passing away of NJY, it will overcome the vacuum as it is a professionally run institution. However it is difficult to fill the vacuum created due to his death.

I pay my heartfelt condolences over the passing away of this academic leader who became a source of inspiration not only for academicians but also for entrepreneurs.

“Challenges for Educators” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Teaching is the only major occupation of man for which we have not yet developed tools that make an average person capable of competence and performance. In teaching we rely on the "naturals," the ones who somehow know how to teach.” - Peter Drucker

Currently educators face several challenges in teaching. With easy access to information to students and information overload students demand more from educators and the latter find it tough to meet the rising aspirations and expectations of the former. The internet has revolutionized the entire world and made the world small where everything has been thrown open with little secrecy for all of us. Here are the crucial challenges for educators globally.

Students have become smarter and sharper with availability of knowledge and information where students often fail to differentiate between information and knowledge. Educators must differentiate clearly that information is not knowledge and there is a thin line that separates them. They must also enlighten students to stay away from information overload as it clutters their minds leading to confusion. In addition, it wastes students’ precious time.

Students expect a lot from educators and want something different from them. Hence, educators must do extensive research in their disciplines and create new concepts with case studies, examples and illustrations to stand out from others. In addition, they must also innovate new tools and techniques in teaching as the traditional ones are losing their relevance. They must involve students into the teaching process through interacting, questioning and grilling thus pulling them out of their comfort zones. Encouraging students’ participation in the teaching process is needed as it not only makes the teaching more effective but also brings benefits to both educators and students thus making it a win-win for all. A good educator is a good learner and he or she must learn from students. Peter Drucker said that he had learnt a lot from students when he shared his knowledge and experience while teaching for EMBA students.

Finally, the educators have a great challenge where they have to meet the rising aspirations and expectations of students. It can happen only when educators teach with passion by having complete command over their discipline. They must do continuous research and share their knowledge with students. While sharing their knowledge the questions raised by students must be noted down and thoroughly researched. It helps them widen their knowledge base and stand firmly on their feet while teaching in the classroom apart from commanding respect from students. To conclude, educators must not take their students for granted. They must come out of their comfort zones to know the pulse of their students and prepare themselves accordingly to stay ahead and stand out from others.
