You can learn a lot while evaluating manuscripts of students, especially from their knowledge and experiences. I learn a lot from my students the way they demonstrate their knowledge, articulate their ideas and present case studies in the classroom. Few educators hesitate to learn from their students and are ashamed of admitting this fact. In some cases, ego prevents some educators learning from their students.
In fact, you can learn from various sources such as reading, observation, training, experience, practice and from your students as well. I teach to the students of EMBA and I am glad to share with you that I share a lot of knowledge with them. And also, I encourage interaction among my students during teaching sessions. Sometimes I am amazed the way the Gen Y demonstrate their ideas and knowledge. They are really superb! At times, I find their thought process is highly advanced, unique and unconventional. Their thoughts, ideas and insights add value to my teaching session. I also update my content at the end of each session by incorporating new things I learn from students and also do thorough research in those areas. The educators who take feedback constantly and learn from their students will be able to make a difference in the lives of students.
When I evaluate manuscripts of my EMBA students I read thoroughly to find out something new to add value to my teaching. I also give them constructive feedback and encourage them to do better. Do you find time to do that? If so, your success rate as an educator is higher. I am proud to declare that my students keep sending me mails as and when they achieve big in their lives and some students still stay in touch me without making any achievements for my guidance and support. I also have huge collection of email ids of all my students, for whom I conducted both teaching and training sessions.
Remember what Marshall Goldsmith said, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. Hence, educators must pull up their socks and stay in touch with their students and learn from them also to excel as successful educators. They must handhold their students and provide direction to them. What worked in the past might not work in the future. Hence, change your tools and techniques of both learning and teaching, and take feedback from their students constantly to make a difference in their lives.
