“Do You have the Attitude of Gratitude?” - Professor M.S.Rao

“A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.”— Cicero

Gratitude is an integral part of life. In some countries, ‘thanksgiving day’ is celebrated to express their gratitude. When someone does favor to us, we must recognize it and reciprocate in whatever the manner possible to us. It gives us a great relief to our mind that we also contributed our best to the people who helped us at the right time. Unfortunately, people take the help for granted and some people even go to the extent of fooling others. It presents them in a poor light and brings down their personality and image in the society.

Gratitude helps you view life with an optimism. Everything appears amazing and exciting when you express your gratitude. Your thoughts will become positive; your actions will become positive; and your life will become beautiful.  When you express the attitude of gratitude you create positive vibes around you which is healthy for your mind, body and soul. It not only keeps you hale and hearty but also keeps the people around you happy and healthy.

Expressing gratitude is not only for the people who helped us but also to the God who is kind to us by giving strength to overcome several challenges in our lives. Unfortunately, people ignore God when they are in good times and remember Him only during bad times. There are people who take credit whenever they achieve success. They don’t thank the people who contributed to their success. They don’t even thank God for their success.  But when things don’t favor and go wrong they blame God or pray to God to provide strength. It is very sad to note that they don’t have the attitude of gratitude.

We must always remember the people who helped us. Behind the success of every individual there is someone who laid the ladder of success. We must remember and thank them regularly. We must also pray to God for our success. Here are the ways to express your gratitude:
  • Maintain a gratitude diary. Write down the list of people who helped you in the past. Express the same regularly. I have the habit of gifting books to my students and followers to inspire them. My intention is to make a difference to build a better world. Also, I dedicate my books to some people who are kind in nature and good in behavior.
  • The biggest gift you can give to others is spending your time. Express your gratitude by spending sometime with the people who helped you in the past.
  • Use words like ‘thank you’ ‘I am grateful to you’ and ‘I appreciate your kind gesture’ to thank the people who helped you. It is difficult to get good people and friends. If you are lucky to get such good people, hold them close to your heart.  We don’t take away any wealth when we die. We leave either good or bad reputation. Leave this world with good reputation. It inspires others to repeat the same to make this world better.

Don’t take the people for granted and regret later. Respect the people who cared for you and helped you. Have an attitude of gratitude. Express it once in a while. It spreads a good message for others who in turn help others.  If everyone has the attitude of gratitude, we can live in a beautiful world with peace and prosperity.  You must be grateful to the people who helped you and stood by you. Although good spread late its impact is immense and beyond lifetime.

I am what I am because of the contribution made by many unsung heroes. I have gratitude towards them. Do you have gratitude toward the people who helped you? If you have, you are on the right track to become a better citizen.

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.” — Buddha
