“Is Education for Employment or Enlightenment?” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela

There is often a debate whether education is for employment or enlightenment. There are different schools of thought about the importance of education. Some scholars think that education is only for enlightenment while some practitioners believe that education is only for employment. Unfortunately, Indian education neither emphasizes on employment nor enlightenment. It emphasizes on 3 Rs – read, write and reproduce which doesn’t encourage creativity among the students. What is essential is to make students think by imparting education with inspiring examples and stories.

Education helps people do their own activities without depending on others. It makes them independent and confident. It helps them keep pace with the world.
It develops holistic personality.  It converts your threats into opportunities and turns your scars into stars. It helps you lead a prosperous and peaceful life.

Education helps us understand ourselves. It helps introspect and realize our mistakes to improve ourselves. It equips students with knowledge, skills and abilities. It empowers them to be confident to face challenges in life.  In fact, both education and character help people to be successful in the world.

Education is essential whether people aspire to be job seekers or job providers. James Truslow Adams once remarked, “There are obviously two educations. One should teach us how to make a living and the other how to live."   Hence, education must be basically meant for enlightenment followed by employment. While enlightenment is the end product, the employment is the byproduct of education.
