“Bridge the Generation Gap through Empathy and Understanding” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Always be nice to your children because they are the ones who will choose your rest home.” – Phyllis Diller

For most of the parents, raising children has become a major challenge.  They often compare their children when they were children to their parents, and boast that they were better than their children.  I often hear such statements from some parents.  I quickly remind them that those days were different from today. Presently children are exposed to media and technology, and they are better positioned than their parents in comforts and luxuries, and above all, they have high aspirations and expectations and want everything on a platter.  It is very unfortunate to hear reports of suicides by children due to silly reasons.  In fact, children don’t know the value of life. Most of the children often complain that their parents don’t empathize with them.

It is rightly said that providing reciprocal unconditional love of their children by parents is the best way to raise positive children in a negative world.  Remember that empathy and understanding is the key to bridge gap between parents and children. Parents must not compare their olden days as it was totally a different scenario.  They must not compare their children with others’ children.  Presently children have higher expectations and parents must realize and meet as far as possible.  The children must also learn to empathize with their parents for their compulsions and constraints.  When there is a right understanding between the parents and the children we can expect peace and harmony in every home. We can also make sure children growing in a healthy environment and becoming healthy citizens.
